Groves Memorial Community Hospital (GMCH) is Wellington county's regional medical center. The in Fergus, Ontario located hospital services a population of approximately 23,000 people in the Township of Centre Wellington and the surrounding areas within Wellington County.
History
Groves Memorial Community Hospital's roots go back more than 100 years. It is on the site of the Royal Alexandra Hospital, named after Queen Alexandra. The original hospital, which opened on January 13, 1902, was founded by Dr. Abraham Groves, who pioneered many surgical firsts, including cataract removal (spring 1875) and Caesarean birth (winter 1888). In 1932 he presented his hospital to the Village of Fergus.
With the growth of (Centre) Wellington the need for services from their regional medical center grew. The current building was constructed in 1955, with new wings added in 1965 and 1980. Donations from many organizations and individuals with regional interests have supported the medical center through the years. Currently, in 2004, modest new construction and significant renovations of Groves Memorial Community Hospital are planned, and fundraising efforts are making headlines in the Fergus Elora News Express and Wellington Advertiser on a weekly basis. The last time we checked (January 2006) $ 14.7 million of the required $ 15 million had been committed. We are almost there...
