Lost Connections

[Published in The Business Eye, July 2007 - Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce]

A lot of companies do not realize the impact that the Internet has on their local business. This is a customer-centred era, and the customer wants to find you on the web.

If you have a website, you want to make sure it can be found in the search engines. But even companies without a website have their contact information all over the Internet: in locally and regionally oriented online business directories.

The problem with many of these listings is that they are far from accurate. Too many listed email addresses no longer exist, and there will likely be plenty of old mailing addresses and phone numbers in them too.

So look yourself and/or your company up in Google, and check whether all information about you in the various directories is still accurate. If something has changed, then let the webmasters of those directories know - they will appreciate your input as their website visitors will benefit from up-to-date information too.

Many people send notices to people in their address book when they change their (email) address. Next time, remember to inform online directories as well. Or better yet: register a domain name and use an email address attached to that domain name (info@mydomain.ca e.g.). Then you will never have to change your business email address ever again.
